Finding percentages: maths games
Finding percentages: maths games
Finding percentages of amounts is one of the harder aspects of the maths curriculum, and indeed many adults find it difficult to work out any but the easiest percentages. The good news is that we have just published 3 mental maths games so that children can have unlimited practice at finding percentages and become really confident; very useful when at the sales!
For the first game children need to use the arrow keys to land a ghost on the haunted house showing 1% of the number. Children will need a good knowledge of dividing numbers by 100 to succeed with this game.
The second game is a timed activity, finding 25% of numbers, but there is only one minute to get as many correct as possible. Of course, 25% of a number is the same as a quarter of the number and mentally often the easiest way to find a quarter is to halve and halve again. A real expert might get 19 or 20 right in the time given, but most children will be scoring less than this.
For the third game children have more time and there is the option of using a calculator. It is about finding percentages such as 60%, which involves 2 processes. Usually the easiest way to do these is to find 10% and multiply by 6 to get 60%. The calculator is only of help if the child knows how to use it correctly. After 10 questions a marked answer sheet is displayed, ideal for printing and using as assessment.
