Year 6 adding and subtracting mixed numbers
Year 6 adding and subtracting mixed numbers.
Like most things in life, there is more than one way of adding mixed fractions. One way is to convert the numbers to improper fractions and find a common denominator and proceed from there. Some children find this very difficult so we have just produced a set of worksheets which look at it slightly differently. With these the whole numbers are ignored at first, whilst a common denominator is found for the fraction part. Then the whole numbers and fractions are added. If the fraction part comes to more than one this is adjusted at the end. A different way, which some children find easier to understand and well worth a try if children have been struggling with fractions.
