Year 4 Geometry
Year 4 Geometry.
The new geometry curriculum will certainly challenge children in Year 4. An important part of this is classifying 2-D and 3-D shapes and children will need to be aware that groups of shapes are often subsets of other shapes. For example, squares are part of the group of rectangles, rectangles are part of the group of parallelograms; cylinders and cuboids are part of the group of prisms.
As well as this children are expected to be able to identify acute and obtuse angles and compare them. At this stage they will not be measuring using a protractor, but it is important to emphasise that angle is a measure of turn.
Another important aspect of this work is to describe positions using co-ordinates and from there describe movements between positions as translations of a given unit. Sounds complicated, but is actually good fun!
Fortunately we have just updated all our Geometry worksheets in Year 4 to include all the above targets as well as using a clearer layout and better fonts.
