Year 6 checking answers games
Year 6 checking answers games.
In my long teaching career if there is one thing which I have found children are reluctant to do it is checking answers. Whether it is answering long multiplication, measuring lines or plotting points on a co-ordinate grid, the tendency is to answer and move on. I think that part of the reason for this is that children perceive the teacher as the person who does the checking with a tick or a cross, so there is little need for them to do it. Yet, checking that answers are correct is an important part of the real world.
To encourage older primary children to check answers we have just published a fun set of games. The first looks at rapid fire odd or even answers, which is always a good way to start any checking of answers. Harder are the tests of divisibility, such as:
• Numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 are divisible by 2
• If the last two digits of a number are divisible by 4 then so is the whole number
• Numbers ending in 0 or 5 are divisible by 5
and so on.
My favourite is the ‘Divisible by 9’ game, where numbers have to be zapped rapidly to get a good score; well worth a try!
