Intelligent practice: addition in Year 2
The main idea behind these pages is to provide activities that lead children down a path where they can think about the patterns and structure of mathematics: we like to call it brainy practice.
For example:
13 + 6 = 19 23 + 6 = 29 43 + 6 = 49 etc
Children can use the knowledge of the first calculation to quickly work out the second and third. This provides ‘intelligent practice’ and helps with conceptual understanding.
This way of working with numbers has had considerable success, especially in the Far East and is well worth thinking about when setting children calculating tasks.
