Compound words
In the English language words, especially adjectives and nouns, are frequently put together to form new words. Often this begins by using a hyphen between the two words but over a period of time the hyphen tends to be dropped and the two words are joined to make one new one.
Our latest set of worksheets looks at compound words without the hyphen, including words such as backbone, waterfall and lighthouse. There are a variety of activities using these compound words, including matching words, dictionary meanings and sentence writing. Great fun and we suggest that when all the hard work has been done children make up new compound words of their own.
