More Year 3-4 dictations for statutory spelling lists
One of the most common requests we get from teachers is for more material on the statutory spelling lists for years 3-4. To have a statutory list of words that children are expected to understand and spell is a new part of the curriculum, hence there is not a great deal of material available. Luckily we have plenty!
The latest resources are sets of short dictations to be read to children so that they can write the sentences down, hopefully with all words correctly spelt, but especially the 100 words from the list.
These short dictations include all the words from the Year 3-4 spelling lists. When reading the dictations speak slowly and clearly, reading the whole sentence first, then repeating it at least twice more, in shorter sections. Each sentence is entirely separate and not related to the others.
Include all punctuation e.g. ‘full stop’, speech marks etc. The sentences can be marked in many ways; just the statutory words can be marked or all of the whole sentence, including all punctuation. One good way is to start with 100 marks and take one mark off for each mistake. These can take some time to mark and it is also a good idea to get children to self mark or mark each others.
Note - some of the words vary slightly from the list, using suffixes, plurals etc.
