Similes worksheets
Similes are used to make writing more interesting. A simile compares two things which are not really similar so that a description becomes more vivid or emphatic.
We can do this by using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
There are many similes which are in common use, such as:
• as good as gold
• as fast as lightning
• as light as a feather
and it is important that children are familiar with these and understand their meanings.
Other similes tell us more about a verb, often using the word ‘like’, such as:
• stick out like a sore thumb
• drank like a fish
• sang like an angel.
We have just published two new sets of worksheets on similes. The first set of four pages concentrates on well-known similes using ‘as’, their meanings and when to use them.
The second set takes a closer look at similes using ‘like’ and moves on to writing original similes and how to make them more interesting by extending the description. In this way writing can become more engaging.
