Beatrix Potter
To celebrate Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday we have written a fabulous set of comprehension worksheets about her and also about her most famous book, ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’. They comprehensions have been written at two ability levels, making it easy to provide material for a range of ages or reading. We also have a set of resources on Peter Rabbit where the sentences have to be put in the correct order.
Beatrix Potter was born in London on 28th July 1866. She had a younger brother Bertram and together they created a zoo in their house where they kept animals such as rabbits, mice and bats!
Her most famous pet was a rabbit called Peter Piper. Beatrix paid 4s 6d (approx. £13 today), for the rabbit, which she thought was very expensive! Whilst on holiday she wrote a letter to her friend’s son Noel and included a story about Peter. She invented three sisters for him called Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail. Noel’s mother suggested that the story would make a good book. Beatrix eventually found a publisher and in 1902 ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ was published by Frederick Warne & Co. The book was so popular that 8 000 copies had sold before it even reached the shops! Since its publication over 45 million copies have been sold.
Beatrix loved the Lake District and in 1905 bought Hill Top Farm in the village of Near Sawrey close to Lake Windermere. From there she found inspiration for some of her other books including ‘The Tale of Tom Kitten’ and ‘The Roly Poly Pudding’.
Whilst living in the Lake District Beatrix became involved with the conservation of the area and worked with a group who later became the National Trust.
As well as comprehensions we also have fact sheets about her life, written in note form, which are an excellent starting point for a piece of factual writing. These three are similar and share some content so we would recommend choosing just one of the three, whichever you think most suitable.
