Grammar worksheets: complex and compound sentences explained
The teaching of formal grammar has certainly made a big come back this year, but many parents are finding it tricky to help their children as they were never taught grammar when at school themselves. We are continuing to develop our grammar resources with clear explanations and exercises, the most recent of which are some excellent sets of worksheets on sentences. The first set looks at four types of sentence:
Statements
Questions
Commands
Exclamations
It is important to use the correct punctuation for each type of sentence as well as to know the meanings of the four types above when it comes to answering the new SAT Grammar Paper.
The second set of worksheets explains what the subject and the object of a sentence are. The third and fourth sets look at the differences between complex sentences and compound sentences; terms that children now need to be familiar with.
Compound sentences are a good way of joining two or more short sentences to make one longer sentence. Each part (or clause) of the sentence has a subject and a verb. A complex sentence is made up of a main clause and a subordinate clause. The subordinate clause depends on the main clause and does not make complete sense on its own.
Sounds tricky? Why not take a look at our most recent grammar worksheets?
