New 12 sided £1 coin worksheets
New 12 sided £1 coin worksheets
A fantastic new 12 sided £1 coin will enter circulation on the 28th March and the Royal Mint will be producing one and a half billion of them!
One of the main reasons for introducing the new coin is that the old one, which has been in circulation for over 30 years, is too easy to counterfeit. The new coin has a number of features to make it much harder to copy, including:
• being 12 sides makes it instantly recognizable, even by touch
• it is made of two different metals; a gold coloured nickel-brass and a silver coloured nickel-plate.
• It has a £1 symbol which changes to the number 1 when seen from different angles
• It has a lot of very small ‘micro-writing on the rim
• It has grooves on alternate sides
• It has a high security feature built in which we do not know about!
I especially like the new design, which was chosen after a public competition and was created by a 15 year old, David Pearce. It includes symbols from all four countries: a Northern Irish shamrock, a Scottish thistle, a Welsh leek and an English rose.
Whilst the shape of the new coin is obviously different, both the thickness and weight are also changing. At 2.8 mm it is thinner than the old £1 coin and it is also lighter, only weighing 8.75 grams.
Of course, this is going to lead to some problems, especially with any equipment that accepts £1 coins, such as parking meters.
From March 28th to October both the old and the new coins can be used. After 16th October retailers will no longer have to accept the old coin but you will still be able to deposit them at a bank.
Exciting, but all the maths worksheets you can find online and all those maths text books still have the old coin on them which will be a concern in the future. Starting this week, it is our aim to replace any worksheets that had images of the old coin with the brand new one. So far we have changed many of our Year 1, 2 and 3 sets of worksheets and we will be changing all our other worksheets featuring the £1 coin over the next few months.
