The skills needed to solve mathematical problems and investigations are a crucial part of the primary maths curriculum. They are skills that might not arise naturally from the day-today teaching of maths and need time devoted to them. That is why we have always had separate categories for problem solving/investigations in all years from one to six.A key part of this category is to view the child’s approach to the task; the process they go through to reach the answer.
