Converting measurements is an important part of Year 5 work covering both conversions within the metric system (eg millimetres to centimetres) and conversions between the metric and imperial systems (eg litres to pints). In this confusing world we have many adults and young people who still speak in imperial, whether it is their height, their weight or the amount of milk they drink. TV does not help, with programmes such as Gardener’s World constantly using feet and inches. This use of two systems is an unnecessary complication and unhelpful for children. Nevertheless it is a fact of life and whilst the vast majority of our pages use the metric system we do have pages on converting to imperial, including one converting pints to litres published this week.Go to Year 5 Measurement
