Year 5 Finding The Difference – Maths Game

Finding the difference between two numbers either side of a whole thousand is the subject of one of our maths games for Year 5 and similar practice can also be found in the Year 5 Subtraction worksheets.
Remember all that counting on children have done in earlier years; it comes into its own now.
For example: finding the difference between 6,002 and 5,899 would be quite complex using the formal written method of subtraction. But mentally it can be completed in a few simple steps as shown below.
* Start with the 5,899
* Count on 1 to make 5,900
* Count on 100 to make 6,000
* Count on 2 to make 6,002.
* The difference is 1 + 100 + 2 = 103
