Statistics in Year 1 and Year 2
Statistics, or handling data, no longer appears at all in the Year 1 National Curriculum Statutory Requirements, but is introduced in Year 2.
For Year 2 the requirements state that:
Pupils should be taught to:
2S1 interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables
2S2a ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category and sorting the categories by quantity
2S2b ask and answer questions about totalling and comparing categorical data.
Whilst there are no targets for Year 1 we believe that children should gain an introduction to statistics as there is more data in the world now than at any other time! In Year 1, we concentrate on collecting and sorting information in lists and tables. Lists are a great source of material. Take every opportunity to make lists with your children from an early age. It could be as simple as a list of the days of the week or the vegetables in this week’s shopping. One of the earliest stages of data handling is to be able to sort items and a lot of practical work can be done, such as tidying up a drawer of pens, pencils, paper clips etc.
