New: Apostrophes
Some people care passionately about the correct use of apostrophes; other people couldn’t care less, to the extent that some companies have removed the apostrophe altogether from their names, such as Waterstones, Currys and Harrods. Other businesses seem to put them everywhere. Market stall holders in particular love to use the greengrocer’s apostrophe, using apostrophes for the plural of fruit and vegetables such as banana’s, potato’s or onion’s.
One of the reasons that apostrophes are used incorrectly is that they are used in two different ways:
- apostrophe of possession e.g. Sam’s story is funny.
- apostrophe for contraction e.g. Don’t do that!
