Knowing how to double and halve numbers is a very useful aid in developing fast mental arithmetic skills in the primary years. At first children need to recognise that to double a number we add the same number to itself, whilst to find half of a number the number needs to be shared into two equal parts.

These terms are introduced as early as Reception with simple practical tasks. Later children will learn, ‘off by heart’, the doubles and halves of small numbers.
