In Year 4 converting measurements is extended to metres and kilometres. The ability to multiply and divide by 1,000 is a great help with this, although many children will find this tricky. Bar models and part-whole models are, again, a great help in representing the connections between the two units. We really ought to celebrate that we are using a simple system which makes it easy to convert units. Writing 550 metres in kilometres is easy: 0.55 km. Writing 500 yards as a percentage of a mile is another thing altogether!
