Measuring Length in Year 4
More work is done with measuring using kilometres this year, using the knowledge that there are 1,000 metres in a kilometre.
Converting between units is an important part of the Year 4 Programme of Study for Measurement. For instance, children should be able to convert kilometres to metres or centimetres to metres, which needs a good knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 1,000, 100 and 10.
Calculating perimeters and finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares is also an important part of this year’s work.
The Programme of Study states:
Pupils should be taught to:
* convert between different units of measure (e.g. kilometre to metre;)
* measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres
* find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares
We have great coverage of all these targets; take a look now.
