Year 1 Recognising Halves
Setting work at the right level helps children believe in themselves and encourages them to make progress. This is probably more true when teaching fractions than most other topics.
Children need plenty of practice making and identifying halves. An important part of this is to understand that some shapes can be divided into half in many different ways. For example, a rectangle can be divided into half horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
We have a great selection of pages for children to both identify and make halves and we have just added two new sets, one involving identifying half of pizzas and the other finding shapes that have been divided in half.
Children in Year 1 will also be introduced to quarters and, again, will need plenty of experience of identifying and making quarters. The idea of ‘equal parts’ is very important.
We also have two new sets of pages on quarters: take a look now.
