It is in Year 3 where it is really important to take time to encourage children to understand what is happening when two fractions are added together. The meaning of the numerator and denominator needs to be emphasised to help with this understanding.

Pictorial representations are a good way to show addition of fractions and it is important not to rush on too quickly, keeping to the addition of fractions which have the same denominator.
