Year 1, 2 and Year 3: New Coins
It’s all change, with both the ‘heads’ and ‘tails’ of our coins having brand new designs. From 1p to £2, eight new coins have been authorised and approved by King Charles III, reflecting his passion for conservation and the natural world. They feature British wildlife and the designs are so good that we are continuing to re-publish our pages which display coins, especially in Years 1, 2 and 3. These new coins will gradually replace the current circulating designs, but you're unlikely to find them in your change for a little while yet. On our worksheets you will have the choice of the old, familiar coins, or our latest wildlife and conservation images.
The 1p coin
The 1p coin depicts the tiny hazel dormouse, looking fast asleep.
The 2p coin
A red squirrel nibbling on a nut, features on the 2p coin.
The 5p coin
The 5p coin has an oak leaf and acorn design, which signifies the oak tree’s role supporting more life than any other native tree.
The 10p coin
A bird you may not know anything about, but I am sure that you will be hearing more from the capercaillie in the future! The capercaillie, the world’s largest grouse, features on the 10p coin.
The 20p coin
The 20p coins depicts a puffin, one of the UK’s favourite seabirds.
The 50p coin
The Atlantic salmon, whose wild population is low due to river pollution, habitat loss, rising temperatures in rivers and overfishing, features on the 50p coin.
The £1 coin
The £1 coin features two bees to symbolise over 250 species of bee that exist in Britain (and of which nearly 100 also exist in Northern Ireland).
The £2 coin
The national flora of our four nations feature on the £2 coin. There is a rose for England, a daffodil for Wales, a thistle for Scotland and a shamrock for Northern Ireland.
We have continued to update our money worksheets to feature these new coin designs but don’t worry, we will not be removing the worksheets with the old coin designs until the new coins are well established. You will find the new updated designs next to the old pages.
Don’t forget, we also have money worksheets in Australian Dollars, New Zealand Dollars and Euros.
