Number lines are now used extensively in primary schools, so it is important that children understand how they work. If children have previously only used number tracks they may well try to label the numbers between the divisions on the line, rather than the divisions themselves. This tutorial explains the number line and helps children understand that one more is the next number to the right and one less is the next number to the left.

We have also published two simple tutorials aimed at helping children understand a quarter of a shape and finding a quarter of a small quantity. Children need a lot of practice looking at shapes and finding four equal parts. These short tutorials will really help with this.

At this stage children do not use the fraction notation of 1/4.
