In Year 2 children are introduced to the notation for fractions such as 1/2, 1/4 and 1/3. They are also taught what each digit of a fraction represents. The bottom number tells us the number of equal parts, whilst the top number tells us how many of these equal parts we have.

We also take a first look at non-unit fractions; where the top digit, or numerator, is more than one.
