Counting in ones, twos, fives and tens have long been part of Year 2 work but children are now expected to be able to count on and back in threes as well.

Concrete resources are a great way to start this, leading to using number tracks and number lines. The aim is to be able to count on in threes from any given multiple of three, up to 99. Patterns can be spotted and, of course, this is a great help when learning the three times table later.
