Three new sets of worksheets have just been published on the subject of adding and subtracting ones to and from 3-digit numbers. In Year 2 children will have added and subtracted ones from 2-digit numbers so this is a small step in their ability to calculate mentally. These pages will be excellent for those children who are not so confident when working with 3-digit numbers.

Place value charts are used to help children see what is happening and as the vast majority of questions do not result in an exchange, children can see that the tens and hundreds do not change. This is a good way to revise the idea that 1 ten is made up of 10 ones. Only if the total of ones is 10 or more will the tens and hundreds columns possibly change.
