Subtraction in Year 6
All that earlier practice at learning subtraction facts will come into good use this year as tricky numbers, including millions and decimals are subtracted mentally.
The standard written method of subtraction will be used accurately, including crossing tens, hundreds and thousands boundaries and using decimals.
It is important that children get plenty of practice using both mental and written methods of subtraction. There is a great deal to pack in before the SATs in early May. To be able to calculate confidently will really help, not only in the Arithmetic Paper but also in the Reasoning Papers. Finally, High School teachers will be delighted if their new intake can quickly and accurately subtract mentally and use written methods when necessary.
