Year 5: Multiples of 2, 4, 5 and 10
To begin with children may well understand that a multiple of a number is any number in its times table. For example, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 are all multiples of 2. From this knowledge they should be able to generate some rules about how to identify multiples, which in Year 6 can lead on to rules of divisibility.
Our most recent resources look at identifying multiples of 2, 4, 5 and 10 using the following rules:
All even numbers are multiples of 2.
Halve a number and if it is even then it is a multiple of 4.
All whole numbers that have a 0 or 5 in the ones are multiples of 5.
All whole numbers that have a 0 in the ones are multiples of 10.
