Place Value in Year 4
Progress in Year 4 is as expected, working with 4-digit numbers rather than just 3-digit numbers. Children should recognise the place value of each digit in 4-digit numbers and partition 4-digit numbers in various ways. They should know that 10 hundreds are equivalent to 1 thousand and that 1,000 is 10 times the size of 100.
An important part of this is identifying the place value of each digit in a four-digit number. For example:
6,527 is made up of 6,000 + 500 + 20 + 7.
Children should be able to identify numbers such as 2,300 and 5,600 as multiples of 100, based on the fact that they have zeros in both the tens and the ones places.
