Multiplication in Year 3

In Year 2 children will have learnt the 10 times table and in Year 3 they will use this knowledge to work with greater multiples of 10. For instance, 16 × 10 or 24 × 10. They will also explore multiplying multiples of ten such as 3 × 50 or 4 × 30.
Whilst learning the 3×, 4× and 8× tables is an important part of the Programme of Study for Year 3 it is also important that written methods of multiplying are introduced. We have a great collection of resources on both mental and written methods of multiplication including using base 10 blocks and place value tables to illustrate written multiplication.
Once the method has been consolidated why not have a go at our ‘missing digits’ pages. The calculations are laid out in the standard written format, including answers, but just one digit is missing from each one. This might sound as if it is very easy, but children can really struggle to find the answers and they require a very good understanding of the written method of multiplication to answer them. If you are looking for something slightly different then these pages are well worth trying.
