Teaching division in Year 2 continues with the idea of sharing equally. It is important to use hands-on materials to provide concrete examples for children to visualise division problems; for example, sharing numbers of objects (counters, cubes etc) into equal groups.

We have plenty of pages to encourage this before moving on to the learning of the 2x table. This is very important to help with solving halving problems mentally. Whilst it is important that children use concrete resources to share by 2, if children know that 2 x 5 is 10 then they can quickly say what 10 divided by 2 is. The connection between dividing by 2 and halving must also be made.

Later, knowledge of the 5x table and 10x table will also help with dividing by 5 and 10. Children will begin to use the division sign to write mathematical statements. e.g. 15 ÷ 5 = 3.
