Children need to be given plenty of opportunity to choose which operations to use in order to solve a particular problem. In Year 5 this will often require two or more stages. Our latest worksheets provide plenty of tricky problems. A typical question is:

• 32 children in class 5A raised money for new art equipment.

• 15 children raised £36 each.
  8 children raised £135 each.
  The rest raised £45 each.

• How much did they raise altogether?

This requires using multiplication, addition and subtraction skills. The key is to find the number of children who raised £45 each by subtracting 15 and 8 from 32.
