We have taken a close look at these papers and there is no doubt that they followed a very similar format to previous years – good to know if you want to revise for next year’s papers!
The Arithmetic Paper in 2025 was very similar to previous years. Children were given 30 minutes to complete the paper, which had 34 questions. Most questions were worth one mark each, although the long division and long multiplication questions were worth two marks each. For these questions one mark could be awarded for showing a formal method even if a calculating error has been made.
As in previous years the first few questions were relatively easy. For example:
- Q2. 456 - 385 =
- Q5. 904 – 8 =
As in previous years it was the fraction questions which children found most difficult. Calculations such as:
- Q11. 2/5 x 5/6 =
- Q26. 5/8 ÷ 3 =
Overall, however, it seems that this paper was fair and increased in difficulty in an appropriate way.
The two Reasoning Papers were also very similar to previous years. Paper 2 had 22 questions and paper 3 had 23 questions. The same main issues seem to have been raised by teachers. Firstly, the number of questions made it hard for some children to complete the paper, even though they were capable of doing the maths to get correct answers.
The second issue raised that there were too many very wordy questions. While the maths was relatively simple, the questions were unnecessarily confusing with complicated wording. For example:
Paper 2 Q19.
The total cost of a school trip for 12 pupils is £780.
The total cost includes travel, food and hotel.
For one pupil, the travel cost is £27 and the food cost is £16.
How much is the hotel cost for one pupil?
Overall, this year’s maths papers were similar to previous years and should reflect pupils’ mathematical understanding well.
These Papers are all freely available on the site. If you have a child approaching Year 6 they will be an invaluable resource, together with our large selection of revision materials.
