Addition in Year 5

Just the one target for Year 5 in the National Curriculum:
- Add numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers.
This is rather vague, but in Year 5 children are expected to work with numbers with more than 4 digits, which would include numbers up to millions. This is hard and it is important that children have a fast recall of number bonds as well as a good knowledge of place value.
Children will also be expected to add decimals up to 2 decimal places, which includes working with money, pounds and pence.
We have plenty of resources to help, including adding three 2-digit numbers, adding multiples of one thousand, adding multiples of ten thousand, adding decimals etc. as well as many on-screen practice activities.
