Schools will usually look at 3D shapes before moving onto 2D shapes, as a 3D shape is easier to explore in a practical way. Indeed, a 2D shape can be made by drawing round a 3D shape. Children will usually know the names of several 2D shapes but will need practice in identifying their properties.
