New Year 6: Units of Measurement
Children are taught metric units of measurement right across the primary years, but in the real world they will often hear adults use imperial measures such as feet and inches. Indeed, the imperial unit, mile, is still the mandatory unit for road signs.
This makes it difficult to know how much of the old imperial measurement system should still be taught. Our latest sets of pages look at both systems. The first concentrates on metric measurement word problems, including having to convert units, such as grams to kilograms.
The second set is quite tricky, looking at sorting units of measurement into tables and choosing the correct unit for measuring distance, mass or capacity. Both metric and imperial units are covered, but conversions between the two are not considered within these pages. We do have other pages which do help children convert from imperial to metric and vice versa which are incredibly useful.
