Year 3: Measuring using mm
In Year 3 children will be introduced to the smallest unit of measurement commonly used – the millimetre. They will be introduced to rulers which have millimetre markings, which is a good way of seeing that there are 10 millimetres in a centimetre. They will also use rulers with centimetre and millimetre markings. The abbreviation ‘mm’ will also be introduced.
Our latest pages give children the opportunity to read lengths made up of whole centimetres and millimetres. Because the millimetre is such a small unit it is possible to measure accurately in whole millimetres. (The old imperial measure of an inch had to be broken down into quarters, eighths or even sixteenths of an inch.)
We have a wide range of measuring resources available so why not take a look now.
