Converting between units is an important part of the Year 4 Programme of Study for Measurement. For instance, children should be able to convert kilometres to metres or grams to kilograms, which needs a good knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 1,000.

Calculating perimeters and finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares is also an important part of this year’s work.

The Programme of Study states pupils should be taught to:

• convert between different units of measure (e.g. kilometre to metre; hour to minute)

• measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres

• find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares

• estimate, compare and calculate different measures, including money in pounds and pence (Not including Time, which we consider elsewhere.)
