Mental arithmetic is still very important in Year 5 with children consolidating dividing by 10 and 100 before going on to divide large numbers by 1,000.

In Year 5 it all comes together, as children use the formal written method of short division to divide numbers up to 4-digits by a 1-digit number, interpret remainders appropriately, depending on the context as well as solving written division problems.
