Whilst there are no targets for Year 1 we believe that children should gain an introduction to statistics, as there is more data in the world now than at any other time! In Year 1, we concentrate on collecting and sorting information in lists and tables. Lists are a great source of material. Take every opportunity to make lists with your children from an early age. It could be as simple as a list of the days of the week or the vegetables in this week’s shopping. One of the earliest stages of data handling is to be able to sort items and a lot of practical work can be done, such as tidying up a drawer of pens, pencils, paper clips etc.
