Year 5: Partition Numbers up to 10,000
Whilst children in Year 5 will not have to deal with numbers in the tens of millions they will still be expected to be familiar with 5 and 6-digit numbers. Our latest resources concentrate on using part-whole models to partition large numbers.
A part-whole model is a pictorial representation between a whole and its parts. Many mathematicians believe that the greater the understanding of the part-whole model a child has, the greater their understanding of the number system. This, in turn, means they are more likely to manipulate numbers for working out addition and subtraction problems ‘in their heads’. This is often called ‘numberness’; a real understanding of how numbers work.
