Geometry (Shape)
A really fun category with lots to do during the year on shape and movement, including making patterns and pictures with 2D shapes. Children should be able to recognise and name common 2D shapes, such as circle, triangle, rectangle and square as well as 3D shapes such as cube, cuboid, sphere, cone and cylinder. Most of this should be done orally with practical equipment.
An area of maths which is often forgotten about is describing position and movement. In our Year 1 Shape category we have a great set of worksheets which look at half, quarter and three-quarter turns. Whilst worksheets are really useful for this it can also be a lot of fun to get outside and give instructions such, ‘as turn a quarter turn to the right, walk forward ten steps, turn a half turn to the left… etc…’ to reach a certain target (blindfolded makes it even more fun!)
