Recognising equal groups and finding totals.

A vital part of understanding the process of multiplication is that it can be done in any order. This is also true of addition, but not of subtraction or division.

Repeated addition is a great way to explain multiplication to young children.

Doubling and halving numbers up to 20.

Halving and doubling word problems.

Using arrays to find the total number in the 2 times table.

More on the 2x table.

Something slightly different using knowledge of the 2x table.

More 5x table work.

Missing numbers in 10x table, up to 10 x 10.

Finding pairs of numbers that are in the 10x table.

Complete the multiplication sentences using knowledge of the 2x, 5x and 10x table.

One way of understanding division is to think of it as equal grouping.

Sharing equally between 3.

Share items into 2 or 5 equal groups.

Sharing fish equally between 5 turtles.

Moving on from sharing between two to sharing between three and four.

Divide numbers up to 36 by 3 with pictures to help. No remainders. Introducing the division symbol.

It's a good idea to have learnt the 5x table before trying these division questions.

There is a number line to help with these dividing by 5 questions which have remainders.

Dividing by ten is probably the easiest of all division questions; apart from dividing by 1!

Good practice at division and could be used as a speed challenge to test knowledge of tables.

Know division tables for 2, 5 and 10 with answers up to 12.

Know halves of numbers up to 20.

Draw a tally chart of the number of fish spotted. Use the data to complete a bar graph.

Make and interpret a tally chart on farm animals.

Further work on tally charts and bar graphs.
